Crime Prevention Advice - Theft from a Vehicle

We are writing to ask for your support in helping reduce vehicle crime within our community. By taking a few simple precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of your vehicle becoming a target.

How to Keep Your Vehicle Safe

Always lock your vehicle, even if you are only leaving it for a short time.

Ensure all windows, sunroofs, and doors are fully closed and secure.

Remove all valuables from your vehicle or keep them out of sight. This includes bags, wallets, mobile phones, laptops, tools, and loose change.

Never leave vehicle keys or spare keys inside the vehicle.

Park in well-lit, busy areas whenever possible or use secure parking facilities.

If your vehicle has an alarm or immobiliser, ensure it is activated every time you leave your vehicle.

Consider fitting additional security devices such as a steering wheel lock, tracker, or dash camera.

Protecting Your Home and Vehicle Keys

Vehicle thefts can occur after offenders gain access to house keys.

Keep vehicle keys away from doors, windows, and letterboxes.

Store keys in a secure location out of sight.

Consider using a signal-blocking pouch (Faraday pouch) for keyless vehicles to help prevent relay theft.

Reporting Suspicious Activity

You are the eyes and ears of your community. If you notice suspicious behaviour around vehicles or people acting unusually in your neighbourhood, please report it.

Contact the police:

999 – If a crime is happening now or there is an immediate danger to life.

101 – To report non-emergency crime or suspicious activity.

You can also report information online via your local police force’s website.

If you wish to provide information anonymously, you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online.

When reporting suspicious activity, try to provide as much information as possible, including:

Descriptions of people involved.

Vehicle registration numbers, makes, models, and colours.

Locations and times.

The direction of travel.

Any CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell camera footage that may assist the investigation.
